Is Twitter Costing Businesses Money?

twitterThe UK is reporting that the social media website Twitter is affecting British businesses and potentially costing them billions of dollars per year. How can this be? Of course, every Twitter user is aware of the fact that it is wildly accessible, especially through iPhone applications. But how much are you using Twitter at work? It seems that a large number of office workers are using websites like Facebook and Twitter throughout the workday, and they have confessed to wasting up to 40 minutes each week.

Some of these same office workers also revealed that they had seen classified information about their company posted on the social media sites, which is another issue altogether. It seems that the company that surveyed these office workers in Britain estimated that over 1 billion pounds was wasted on a yearly basis. Twitter is quite addicting, but it is not something that offices appreciate when you are spending up to an hour a week on a social media site. Many of the employees justified this usage because they said that their employer did not give them any guidelines on how often they should use Twitter. Maybe this is something that should be in the employee handbook?
